My new casts-Orange and black for Bengals and Halloween

October 26th
We arrived at Shriners at 930am. We were greeted by everyone enthusiastically as they all love to see Gideon. He was given a Halloween treat bag and a new Wii game of his choice. Not to bad. Dr. Van Bosse and his staff came in and we discussed his upcoming surgery. He will be sure to give Gideon either an epidural for pain or a small catheter that goes right to the leg that will instill medication to keep him comfortable. Last time they couldn't get the epidural in Cincinnati and he had to depend on IV pain meds which just were not cutting it. So that made me feel better. I just want him as comfortable as possible. He will go to the PICU for at least one night and then to the floor for a few days. But first we get through the next 2 weeks of casting. He will also plan another surgery for the knees as soon as Debbie can get us on the schedule but it may be another year for this. The sooner the better but Dr. Van Bosse is really booked. We will pray abouth this and leave that in the Lord's hands. He will work it all out. Anyway. We finished the casting around 12 noon and went to lunch. After lunch we caught up with Kim and Peyton. Peyton also has arthrogryposis. He is 5. He is also effected in the upper and lower extremities like Gideon. We spent some time with them. I mentioned to Kim that I forgot my face scrub and she gave me hers so I wouldn't have to walk to a store out in the dangerous streets-ha ha. We love spending time with friends from Shriners. We then went to get the brake on Gideon's wheelchair fixed in the therapy department. They will have to order a new brake for him. Back to the RMH. After dinner we had ice cream and a Halloween movie. After talking with Tim and the kids we were off to bed. This morning we went to the zoo. I will post pictures and post on that a little later today. We are also asking for prayer as we brace for the Hurricane which will be hitting here Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. We are in New Jersey at the Ronald McDonald House and they are expecting it to be really bad. Please keep us in prayer as we could lose power for quite some time. I will keep you posted. We are blessed and know God has us in the palm of his hands.
Gideon continues with PT and OT and is preparing for our trip back to Philly. Abby and Clara had their dental surgeries and did great. They are all back into the swing of school and we are keeping busy. Gideon and I head back to Philly on October 25th and he will have 2 weeks of serial casting and then surgery on both legs on November 8th. We should return home around the 17th of November. Please be in prayer for Gideon. He keeps telling me how nervous he is about the surgery. But he has been very sad lately watching his brothers and sisters do things he can't. He is more determined than ever to be able to walk one day. We know that with God all things are possible! We will be in Philly for Halloween. The other kids will have to go out without mom for the first time. Dad will have to walk around with them instead of passing out the candy. We all adjust where we need to. I will try to update more often. For now I will leave you with some pics of the kids in the park.Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-26487053961266094482012-07-26T18:54:00.000-07:002012-07-26T18:54:04.919-07:00Therapy DayJuly 26, 2012
Yesterday was Christmas in July. We had a great time. Santa came and presents were abundant. All the kids were so excited. The RMH really did a great job. I posted pictures on facebook from my phone but can't get pictures on the blog from here. I will post those after I get home.
Today we went to Shriners for Physical therapy and he did really well.Measurements showed he had regressed since we were here last time. Tomorrow they are going to put him in the stander again. We are still waiting for insurance to approve a stander for Gideon at home. He will have his casts changed tomorrow too. We will load him up with Motrin before we go so maybe this will help with the pain.
Gdeon's friend Gracyn is having surgery tomorrow. Please be in prayer for her. She was in a motor vehicle accident. We plan to visit her on Monday.
Another friend-Avery had chemo today and is not feeling well. Please say a prayer for her too.
Talked to Tim and the kids tonight and all is well at home. They saw big brother Jordan in Fiddler on the Roof today. I was so sad to miss it.
It's getting late and we need to get up early. Will update again tomorrow.
We are so blessed!Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-76637799839620488752012-07-23T18:48:00.001-07:002012-07-23T18:48:32.002-07:00Cast #2July 23, 2012
Today Gideon got cast #2 on his arms. He had told Dr. Z that he hated having his casts sawed off so Dr. Z said ok we will soak them in water and then unravel them. So we started the soaking process when we got there and after a 1/2 hour of soaking and still not soft enough to unravel and Gideon having to pee we decided to go with the saw. He did very well. Casts off and off to the bathroom! Casts #2 went on with a great deal of pain and tears but Dr. Z is great. He tried to distract him and make it fun. He wrapped a ninja wrap around his head and painted his face with plaster and put feathers in his head wrap. Gideon was very tough looking and said "nobody will mess with Gideon!" Gideon also had informed Dr. Z that he was unable to play his DS the way he casted his thumbs so to be sure to let his thumbs free this time and Dr. Z abliged and tonight Gideon has happily played his DS.
Gideon has made many friends here at the Ronald McDonald house and not all of them children. We have met several families with children just like our Gideon and it is great to be able to share experiences. Tonight one of Gideon's friends arrived back to the Ronald McDonald House. FuXia came in and Gideon was so excited. It made his night. This really is like a home away from home. We are very blessed to be surrounded by some wonderful families and staff here.
Tomorrow we are going to take a trip to Target to get some needed supplies and maybe we will take a walk. Gideon is getting a haircut tomorrow afternoon too.
Tim say the kids are doing fine. He is keeping them occupied, taking them to movies in the park and out for ice cream. They are going to see Jordan's play at Kincaid-The Fiddler on the Roof, on Thursday and then some swimming friday and Saturday. Gideon will have physical therapy Thursdayand Friday and then another cast change Friday and again Monday. We fly home on Tuesday.
Please pray for good results with the casting and for Gideon to tolerate the pain and be able to sleep. Pray for Tim and the kids at home too. We just thank God for these Doctors here and Philly and the great people at the Ronald McDonald House!Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-1474476730334209792012-07-21T12:29:00.001-07:002012-07-21T12:29:08.276-07:00Philadelphia -Always the Unexpected7/21/2012
Gideon and I arrived in Philly on Thursday and are staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden New Jersey, our home away from home. The plan was to see both Dr. Z and Dr. VanBosse on Friday establish a plan and head home on Saturday. Well-not exactly how it turned out. I had big concerns in 2 areas. First his right leg- the old hardware is still in place since January of 2010. His femur is extremely bowed and causing him some pain. The hardware should have been removed by 1 year. Anyway we have been on the waiting list for surgery since last October. So after 2 trips to xray Dr. VanBosse is concerned but wants to compare these xrays immediately following the original surgery in Cincinnati. Although I had provided them with these xrays back in October they can't find them. So for now the plan is for surgery in november and to plan on serial casting for the feet 2 weeks prior to the surgery. So we come 2 weeeks prior to surgery for casting then a week for surgery and another week after. So potentially a 1 month stay in November. Hope I can take family leave. The other concern was the arm that we had serial casted in cincinnati. This did not do much good. The problem was that the OT's did the casting-and they are not very aggressive- and they did not use plaster casts-they used soft casts. So Dr. Z wanted to cast that arm again but also cast the right arm so my poor boy is in casts on both arms. We will stay for 10 more days and have these casts changed on Monday, Friday and the following monday. He is pretty miserable. He throbbed in pain most of the night and has been pretty sore all day. It will be a long 10 day for us but also for Tim and the kids back at home. I am on vacation and we had planned on taking a 2-3 day trip with the kids, now Tim will have to do it by himself. As I said not what we expected. So please pray for us and for Tim and the kids. I trust these doctors and know they are doing what is best for Gideon-He is such a mighty warrior! There was a young man here who had spine surgery for scoliosis and isn't moving too well. After spending time with Gideon he told me that Gideon was an inspiration to him. He was very moved about the way Gideon takes everything in stride and always with a smile. My little guy is an inspiration to me too!Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-21277933079345390422012-02-19T16:17:00.001-08:002012-02-19T16:22:13.776-08:00testThis is a test sentanceJackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-71043438511942082952012-01-08T08:49:00.000-08:002012-01-08T08:57:18.348-08:00In PhiladelphiaJackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-51002828135830126512012-01-01T13:47:00.001-08:002012-01-01T13:56:13.154-08:00Merry ChristmasChristmas 2011

One very Happy Little Boy

Our whole family together for Christmas

Cousin Jacob helping Gideon decorate Jesus Birthday cake

Celebrating with some special friends

Gideon with Santa Claus

Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-27541617744475469302012-01-01T13:26:00.000-08:002012-01-01T13:44:51.903-08:00Philadelphia TripDecember 19, 2011
Another trip to Philly. I think it is number 5. Anyway we flew through Detroit this time. It is a really cool airport with a tunnel that changes colors and plays music and a cool tram to ride. We stayed at the Ronald McDonald house in Camden again and this time had the Tie Dye room. We met up again with Anna and Fu Xia and made friends with Joe from Florida. Fu Xia has arthrogryposis like Gideon and Joe was a super nice teenager who had a spinal cord injury from a dirt bike accident a few years ago. Gideon loved hanging out with these 2 guys. Anna (Fu Xia's mom) was great company for me as well. The kids were given gifts at Shriners from the local NFL team-the Eagles. Our stay was once again made nice by all the volunteers and great families at the Ronald McDonald house. Gideon was measured for his braces and had casts put on again but this time below the knee. Much nicer. His feet look so nice and straight. Next visit is January-we leave on the 7th, he will have casts removed and braces placed on the 9th. We will be staying the week because Gideon will have surgery on his arm with Dr. Zlotlow on the 13th. We hope to go to the RMH on the 14th and then travel home on the 15th. Dr. Z will be doing a rotational humerus osteotomy on the Left arm and bringing his thumb up. This will turn his hand to face the right way and give him the ability to pinch with his thumb and forefinger. He will be in a cast for 4-6 weeks. Get rid of one cast and get another!

Look at those beautiful straight feet

Tie Dye Room

Gideon and Fu Xia

Tunnel in Detroit Airport

Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-67519488988832949392011-12-05T19:08:00.000-08:002011-12-05T19:19:42.396-08:00Pictures of our Dec 5th Philly tripDecember 5th, 2011
Here are some pictures from our trip. Maybe only 1-2 more to go. Last week Dr. VanBosse said we weren't even 1/2 way there but this week he said maybe 1-2 more. So next trip when the casts come off Gideon will be measured for his braces and then casts put back on. He will decide then if any more casts are needed. So that was good news. The bad part was once again the long wait. We arrived at 9:30am and did not get called back to a room until 1210pm. His casts were removed and we waited until 2:15 pm for Dr. VanBosse to come in. We had not had anything to eat since 7:30 am. The casts coming off were difficult again and Gideon cried through this. He did pretty good with the casts going back on with the right foot but the left foot he cried and cried big tears. He has a big open area on his big toe that is so sore. He is doing better tonight. Hopefully he will be able to sleep tonight. A little tylenol with codeine to help with that. We had good flights here, Cincinnati to Chicago and Chicago to Philly. A moderate amount of turbulence-I just hate that. Please pray for very smooth flights home for us tomorrow. We leave at 12:10 pm and fly into Chicago. The flight leaves there at 3:15 and we arrive in Cincinnati about 5:25pm. Another long day. I will post some pictures of our time here. The Ronald McDonald house is all decorated for Christmas and we did a lot of Christmas crafts. We even got to pick out some Christmas presents to take home. So we come back on December 18th for his Dec 19th appointment and then maybe 1 or 2 more times, until we schedule his first surgery. This is all very difficult but we just know we are doing the best we can for Gideon. Dr. VanBosse and Dr. Zlotlow are the best in their field for Arthrogryposis. With them Gideon has hope of becoming more independent and possibly walking. We know that God has brought us to these doctors and we will do all we can to be sure Gideon gets the care he needs. Gideon is such a little warrior. We always pray while we are on the plane and then thank God for the safe flight afterwards. He prays so sweetly. He knows that God goes with us everywhere we go and he will just start talking to him. He leaves an impression everywhere we go. He is such a joy to everyone he meets and we are so blessed to be his family. Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-58368472815795697772011-11-06T17:34:00.000-08:002011-11-06T17:57:12.532-08:00Trip #2 to Philadelphia/ShrinersNovember 6,2011
We arrived yesterday in Philadelphia without any problems-thank you Jesus! Smooth flights all the way. We were able to fly in this time thanks to my very dear friends Shari and John-we love you guys and you will be blessed! Anyway we were able to get a room at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Camden New Jersey where we stayed last time. This time we got a boys room-we are in the farm/tracker room. Though it is not in a very safe area it is really very nice here. We have met some very special people here again this time. We will be in prayer for sweet Emma, 4 years old and diagnosed with cancer. She is from England and she and her parents and older sister are here for the next 6 months to get her the treatment she needs that isn't available in England. We met Ricky who also has arthrogryposis like Gideon and he is from Ohio, between Cincinnati and Dayton, very close to us. Anyway today was a lazy day of just hanging out and getting to know some of the people here. Tomorrow we head to Shriners for Gideon's cast change and to see Dr. VanBosse again. We hope to get a better idea of the future trips and the upcoming surgeries. Below are some pics of the last 2 days. Will post more tomorrow after our visit at Shriners.

Gideon made some fun chocolate treats

Silly Gideon

Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-53206214963532334242011-10-25T18:54:00.000-07:002011-10-25T19:06:06.565-07:00Making Plans for Next Philly Trip

October 25,2011

Well things are not falling into place for the next trip as I had hoped. They will not schedule any of our visits on a Friday. They say they do all serial casting on Mondays only. So our next appointment is for Monday Nov 7th-a day I am scheduled to work so I need to try to arrange a trade with someone. The other issue is I can't get a flight with Miracle Flights since it is so close=they need at least 10 business days. That means we either pay for flights or rent a car and drive-our car is not dependable. Either way it is a big expense. A friend suggested checking with a local Shriner to see if they would help in any way. It's worth a try. We will see. I am really worried about driving this by myself. I am putting it in the Lord's hands to work it all out. The visits after that will be every 2 weeks and we will be able to get on Miracle Flights for those. I can get through this next one because I can do all things with Christ who gives me strength! Also be praying for our friend Bryson. He is another sweet China treasure with arthrogryposis who is in Philly right now and will be having surgery on Thursday! Thanks to all who are following along and will be praying for our mighty warrior Gideon!

Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-59737051263780677662011-10-23T13:50:00.000-07:002011-10-23T14:17:40.013-07:00New Doctors and New Plans! Gideon's "Guppy Smile"

Gideon just after being casted.

We had the pink Daisy room at the Ronald McDonald House

At the RMH with Ronald

On the plane!

October 23,2011
I haven't posted in quite a while and really so much has been going on. We have brought home 2 more treasures and this time from the Ukraine-our sweet Abby and Clara. Both are 9 years old and blessed with an extra chromosome. They are adjusting beautifully. Both are in school and loving it!
Gideon recovered well from his surgery in January but his doctor in Delaware retired. We knew we needed to find another specialist but with the adoptions this summer we had put it off. Well we finally made our trip to Philadelphia this past week to see the infamous Dr. VanBosse. We had heard from many families that this was the doctor to see and that he could work miracles with our special kids with arthrogryposis. We also planned to see Dr. Z for his arms while there. Anyway we had met up with some wonderful families in August that had children with arthrogryposis and learned a lot. One grown girl with arthrogryposis was a wealth of information. Tracey also told me about Miracle Flights-southwest airlines provides free flights for children needing medical treatment- So Gideon flew for free and I only had to pay $50. We stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden New Jersey, another blessing. Anyway we had our appointments on Friday. We met Dr. VanBosse whom we just loved and he really came across very knowledgeable about Gideon's diagnosis. His first plan was to cast Gideon right away to straighten out the feet-again! He then informed me that the osteotomies that were done on Gideon in January were not done high enough on the femur to give the best results so he wants to redo that as well as some other surgeries on knees and feet. He will not be able to do any surgery for about 6 months though because he is so booked up. They will let us know a date soon. Dr. Z saw Gideon for his arms and hands and he also wants to do surgery to straighten out his left arm. His left hand turns outward because the humerous bone is twisted so he wants to do that and do surgery on the hands to bring the thumbs out to a better position. He would like to do this at the same time as Dr. VanBosse so again not sure when. But right now Gideon needs to go through the serial casting=being recasted every 2 weeks-meaning a trip to Philadelphia every 2 weeks for about 5-6 times depending on how long it takes to get the feet straight. Then new AFO's (braces) for his feet. It was a lot to digest. We will make sure Gideon gets the treatment he needs no matter what. The cost will add up though. The cab from the taxi to the Ronald McDonald house(RMH) was $50 and then back again. The cab to Shriners Hosp was $30 and then each night at the RMH was $15 not to mention money for meals in the airport and hospital. I guess I will need to so some fundraising. Tim is still unemployed (since july). So things are tight but it works out that he is here with the kids when I am gone.
We thank God for leading us to these Doctors who have high hopes for Gideon. We are praying that one day soon our boy will be walking! We have been blessed in so many ways and cannot thank Our God enough. I will update with each trip to Philly and let everyone know how it is all progressing. I will post pics too!

Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-875122794475506452011-02-24T04:29:00.000-08:002011-02-24T04:30:55.805-08:00Cast Removal Today!February 24, 2011
Today is the day for the casts to come off! It is rescheduled for Monday evening and in Cincinnati so that is closer for us anyway. Gideon is doing great as far as the pain is concerned. He hasn't had any pain medication for over 3 days now and he is sleeping great. His biggest complaints are that he is hot and sweaty and itching all over. We try to keep him as clean as possible with sponge baths daily and rubbing him down as far as we can reach in the cast. Also just scratching his head feels so good for him. He is bored too. The kids are home today due to snow so he has some entertainment today. They push him all over in the wheelchair and play wii a lot. Praying for the next several weeks to go quickly and for good healing of his bones. Praying he is able to stand straighter when these casts come off and get right back into therapy. Using the pain pump which helps. He's trying to play Wii but it's difficult for him to control in a laying position so he is very frustrated. He ate a little bit. Will try to get him cleaned up a little and play something else like cards to distract him. Hopefully they will get the foley catheter out today. He really wants me to hold him but he has so much connected to him right now with the monitor, IV's, foley etc.. I had to lay in the bed with him last night which was fine since I let Danielle have to pull out bed-she ended up staying since the roads and traffic were so bad. Daddy is coming back tonight after work and bringing him a milk shake which he is looking forward to. Thanking God that the hardest part is over and praying for a quick 6 weeks until casts come off. Thank you Lord for this precious child and for bringing him through this rough surgery. You are an Awesome God!Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-46432114682509776432011-01-07T23:31:00.000-08:002011-01-07T23:39:24.531-08:00Rough NightJan 8 2:30am. Well he came through the surgery great. Once we were to his room he was asking for Wii and telling everyone what he needed. He played Wii for several hours and only would complain that he wanted the casts off but not that they hurt. He ate jello and drank apple juice. All night his heart rate has been 150's to 170's=too fast and respirations in 40's and 50's but they are just watching that. As the night progressed to around 11 pm he began to get very upset about the casts and saying he didn't feel well. He said the casts felt squeezy. When I asked where he said around his chest. It was apparently feeling like he couldn't breathe and he panicked. They gave him some valium and this helped with a shot of pain med from the pump and he slept until about 2am. He woke in severe pain so another hit on the pain pump, some tylenol and repositioning and he is finally sleeping again. He really must have had some of the caudal medicine they gave during surgery helping out initially so we need to be sure to keep dosing him with the pain pump to keep it under control. We are using ice packs as well to get some of the swelling down. Praying for a couple hours of rest now. More in the am.Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-50461458419377278322011-01-07T07:37:00.001-08:002011-01-07T07:40:50.909-08:00Hospital pics before surgery

Gideon and Monkey George
Jackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3483305149992133806.post-70576542801310043782011-01-07T07:36:00.000-08:002011-01-07T07:37:11.856-08:00Pictures at the hospital before surgeryJackie Eganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11384540930657872879noreply@blogger.com0
